#284: Authenticity is a Practice
#284: Authenticity is a Practice
In this Friday Facts episode, I want to talk about the buzz word, “authenticity” especially in regards to the online space and building a business. Brene Brown defines authenticity as, “ the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are.” We make a choice to be authentic, live in alignment, say yes and no to the things that matter, and honour our boundaries. It is a practice, not a one time thing.
In today’s episode we discuss:
1) Authenticity is not a case of having it or not. It is a practice, it is consciously living a life that we want to live. It requires a check in on a regular basis as our lives change, we change, and we are faced with different challenges everyday.
2) When we make decisions for the wrong reasons it does not mean that we failed. Instead it means that we are humans on a journey getting to know ourselves and learning what we want to say yes and no to. It is a hell yes or it is a no. There truthfully is no in between. When we make decisions for the wrong reasons, that out of alignment or inauthenticity is a chance to learn how to do things differently the next time.
3) As Brene Brown says, “there is no authenticity without boundaries”, and this hit home for me. Living a life with boundaries means living in our highest form of self respect, giving to ourselves and being ok with saying no to something that simply isn't meant for us. When we say no to others it can be uncomfortable, but that short feeling of discomfort is so much better than anger, resentment or frustrations. None of those emotions will move the needle forward in our lives.
