#196: Let That Guilt Go
#196: Let That Guilt Go
In this mindset episode, we are talking about the concept of guilt, the difference between shame and guilt, and how much guilt weighs when we carry it. This quote by Audre Lorde explains it perfectly. “Guilt is not a response to anger; it is a response to one’s own actions or lack of action. If it leads to change then it can be useful, since it is then no longer guilt but the beginning of knowledge.”
In this episode, we discuss:
- Guilt is an emotion that keeps us at a standstill and is a focus on the fact that we are judging ourselves and feeling like we are never doing enough or doing enough of the right things.
- Christmas will be different this year no matter what we do because of how this year is unfolding. It is easy to drop into overcompensating this year but that is a story we are creating and telling ourselves.
- How can we recognize guilt in our lives and where we are putting the shackles on our own feet to keep us stuck in our stories? When we hold onto the guilt the weight of it only increases, and our own self-care is likely diminishing in the process.
- We don’t realize the weight of guilt until we decide to stop carrying it. It is time to let go of guilt and stop punishing ourselves by reframing the story and forgive ourselves for the guilt we have put on ourselves.
- When we hold onto guilt, we cannot be in gratitude for what we have accomplished, and we cannot stay in the present moment. This is when gratitude is possible and the most powerful.
